Kate Spade, who has starting making quite a name for herself in the fashion industry has recently been served a $1 million lawsuit for copying the late Vera Neumann’s poppy designs.
Pictured above, the lawsuit claims that Kate Spade’s design (right) copied Vera’s famous 1979 poppy design (left). A good thing to note is that back in 2004, Kate Spade had raved about Vera’s designs in the past.
When Vera made scarves, there was nothing cutesy about them. They always made you feel happy.
This has caused Neumann’s estate to take her speech literally as well:
Kate Spade has indicated, at least several years ago, that among the items and products that have inspired her designs are the silk-screened scarves of Vera.
The estate wants $1 million plus interest–all of Kate Spade’s sale of infringing items and cost of legal fees. They also want the remaining infringing items and equipment used to make the design turned over to them.
