In folklore bats turn into vampires. In fashion, bats inspire Christian Siriano’s Fall 2012 collection. More specifically a 1930s film called The Vampire Bat. For Siriano, bats have a creepy, dark and dramatic presence. Dark and dramatic definitely describes the overall look of the fall collection. Fittingly, I heard Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries) was in attendance! To take the bat-love even further, Siriano was so enamored by the intriciate details of bat veins and wing bone structure that you can actually see them in some of his shift dresses. Several short dresses appeared to have chiffon capes that made models look as if they were flying down the runway. One white maxi dress I can recall had two panels of chiffon over each shoulder blade to look like wings.
Also lending themselves to the bat theme were the black motorcycle jackets paired with long flowy full skirts. If a motorccycle jacket could morph into a bat, it would be a bat’s body and the skirt looked as if it could turn into wings.
The bat vein details on some of the dresses also interestingly made the dress look almost like armor. This communicates a sense of fierceness. Overall, a great collection for those who like to incorporate a little fierceness into their Fall wardrobe.
On an interesting note, a lot of the shoes that were worn (which I unfortunately couldn’t take pictures of), will be available at Payless this Fall as part of the Christian Siriano x Payless collaboration!
Here are some photos I managed to take at the show:
