Lauren Moffatt’s Fall 2012 collection titled, “The Old School for Wayward Girls” collection made me feel giddy, like a schoolgirl upon the discovery that the inspiration for her collection was… the school girl. The presentation was set at Old School, a building in Soho that looks like, well, an old school. The presentation consisted of two classrooms where models played the role of school girls in class wearing schoolgirl looks that served as a nod to the ’50s and ’60s. It was one of very few presentations I’ve ever attended that really stuck with one theme — the models sat in desks in one room drawing on notebooks, glancing off into the distance as if bored (as in real life). The other room was an art class and models were poised to learn a painting lesson.
The collection was not only girly but reflected an air of mischief. Such instances occured in the collection in the form of sequins, crop tops and a particular A-line, midi-length dress that showed off the bare midriff area. Balancing out the naughty were simple girlish details like the peter pan collar, pleated skirt, bows and frills. My first impression of this collection is that Zoey Deschanel is probably a fan.
Overall, it seems like girlishness in fashion is extending its moment well into the Fall. No complaints here!
