Marie Claire’s Fashion Director/Project Runway Judge Nina Garcia’s fourth style book titled, “Nina Garcia’s Look Book: What to Wear for Every Occasion” is expected on shelves Aug. 10. The book’s title does not lie. Nina Garcia’s Look Book offers Nina’s advice on every life occasion imaginable and ultimately answers every, “What should I wear?” question you’ve ever had in 318 pages. The book offers Nina’s advice in 8 segments that cover a woman’s life: work, day, night, holidays, life events, weddings and dream travel. (That last one, not so much applicable to me.) Although just 8 segments of life, a lot of bases are covered from the simplest; what to wear to a job interview to the most complicated, yet overlooked fashion situation; what to wear to meet a potential surrogate. Yes, surrogate, as in surrogate mother.
And that’s not the only interesting instance in which fashion advice is often needed. In reading this book, I learned a lot about myself. Mainly the fact that I’ve really been taking my appearance lightly and that a lot of my style decisions are made unconsciously. Especially when it comes to gardening, hangovers or jury duty. (Nina has advice for that too!) That said, I believe Nina might’ve written this book because she receives many “What should I wear?” queries (WSIW) on just about anything and maybe…she’s tired of them. Just think — wouldn’t you write a book if someone asked you what she should wear to work on her garden or deliver her own baby? I know, I would. This book just might be the end-all for all future WSIW questions.
The one thing that I admire most about the book is that Nina’s style rules aren’t extremely rigid or set in stone. After all, fashion is about breaking rules and Nina understands this. For every style occasion in the book, there’s a “Rule Breakers We Love” section that talks about a celebrity who’s successfully broken style rules to make a look work for herself. You don’t always have to agree with what Nina has to say about style.
It’s not just style advice Nina has to offer — she also covers a lot of tips on beauty or information associated with each event to dress for. The ‘what to wear to a wine tasting’ section most definitely has a few bits of useful information regarding wine tastings and wine and what to keep in your purse. Inspirational quotes regarding life and style are peppered throughout the book. Some of my favorites:
“Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren’t.” - Margaret Thatcher
“You don’t learn style from watching people on a runway. Fashion happens every morning when you wake up.” - Shalom Harlow
“If you can’t make it good, at least make it look good.” - Bill Gates
All of what this book has to offer is organized in the most stylish way possible with pretty illustrations drawn by Ruben Toledo. While the book is 318 pages, it’s organized so that it’s easy to locate the life situation you’d like to dress for then flip to that section quickly. If you’re in a pinch and need to know something quickly, this book can easily be your go-to.
Overall, I highly recommend this book to pretty much anyone who’s asked themselves ‘what should I wear?’ In a nutshell — everyone except for Nina Garcia.
The book will be available Aug. 10. For more information or to pre-order the book, head here.
