Now that the fashion weeks in the international “fashion capitals” (New York, London, Milan, Paris) have finished, Japanese designers are ready to show their Fall collections in Tokyo. Although Japan Fashion Week has grown to become a big production inside the country, it still hasn’t garnered the same caliber of attention that the other international shows have. Internationally-known Japanese designers, such as Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons, show at the Big 4 fashion weeks and not in Tokyo.
This season, Japan Fashion Week will run from March 23rd to the 26th. There will be 44 designers featured, such as Junya Tashiro, Yuki Torii, and fur fur.
Japanese design tends to be a little more out-there than some of the traditional European and American designs, but it is often very clever and artistic. I sincerely hope that fashion editors warm up to Japanese design in the coming years — I’d love to be able to attend Japan Fashion Week some day, and maybe see Tokyo added to the list of fashion capitals.
